Waiting on God When It Feels Too Long (Lessons from Hannah – 1 Samuel 1)

Waiting on God — Part 1 of 3

There are seasons in life where waiting feels heavier than we expected—not just because of time, but because of what we are carrying while we wait.

There is something I have been waiting on for a long time. Something important, deeply personal, something that has been in my prayers for years.

I don’t always talk about it in detail, but I know I’m not the only one carrying something like this. Maybe your situation looks different from mine, but if you’ve ever waited for something that truly matters—something you’ve prayed about again and again—then you understand this kind of season.

When You Don’t Understand the Delay

As I was praying about what to write this week, I thought I was going in a completely different direction. I was planning to write about depression, because God has delivered me from that.

But God had something else in mind.

While reading First Samuel chapter 1—the story of Hannah—something shifted in me. I realized this wasn’t just her story; it was speaking directly into my season.

Before Hannah ever reached the moment of surrender, there were years of waiting—years of longing, asking, and not seeing the answer.

She wanted a child deeply, yet while she waited, she had to watch someone else have what she desired. Not only that, but she was also mocked for it. Year after year, the other woman would provoke her, reminding her of what she didn’t have and stirring up that pain again.

Scripture says she would cry and could not even eat. That is not small pain. That is deep anguish.

Watching Others Receive What You Prayed For

There is another part of waiting that is not always easy to talk about—watching others receive what you have been praying for.

Sometimes its people close to you—a friend, your husband, your partner, your best friend. Other times, it’s people who don’t even know you or your story.

They celebrate. They move forward. They step into the very thing you’ve been asking God for, while you are still waiting.

You may not feel angry or even jealous, but there is often a quiet question that rises within you:

“God… why is my path taking so long?”

What Hannah Teaches Us About Waiting on God

As I read her story, I began to reflect on my own journey—not in the same circumstances, but in the same feeling.

The waiting. The questions. The moments when you don’t understand why it’s taking so long.

Sometimes people ask questions like, “Why is it taking so long?” or “Are you sure everything is okay?” Even when they don’t mean harm, it can feel like you are being quietly questioned, like something must be wrong.

So instead of explaining everything, you stay silent.

Maybe you’re not waiting for the same thing I am, but maybe you are carrying something that matters deeply to you.

It could be waiting or longing to become pregnant after years of hoping. It could be a sickness that hasn’t left, and you are still believing for healing. It could be a marriage that feels like it’s slipping away, and you’re praying for restoration. Or maybe it’s direction—feeling stuck and unsure of what comes next.

Something you’ve been bringing before God that still hasn’t come to pass.

Whatever it is, waiting can feel heavy.

When the Weight Becomes Too Much

reached a breaking point.

A moment where she could no longer carry it the same way.

And I realized—that’s where many of us are. Still believing, still praying, but feeling the weight of the waiting.

Recently, after hearing news from someone close to me who received something, they had been waiting for, something in me was stirred. Not in anger, but in a deep question.

That night, I went before God and cried out—honestly, openly, holding nothing back.

Peace Before the Answer

And something shifted.

I didn’t fully understand it at the time, but I felt a peace come over me that was different. It wasn’t because the situation had changed, but because something inside me had.

It reminded me of Philippians 4:7—that the peace of God can guard your heart and mind, even when you don’t understand everything.

Reflection

And that’s where I want to pause today.

This is not the end of the story. There is more to what happened next, and how that moment of surrender began to change everything.

What is weighing on your heart right now?

What burden have you been carrying… quietly, for a long time?

What is that one thing that keeps coming back to your mind—
the thing you’ve prayed about, but still feel the weight of?

Take a moment today and bring it before God.

You don’t have to have the perfect words.
You don’t have to hold it together.

Just be honest with Him.

Because He is there.
He is listening.
And He sees every step, every moment, every tear.

Even in the waiting…
you are not alone.

Take this moment today to sit with Him.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about what happens when that burden is truly surrendered.
