Have you ever done something with all your heart — something you truly believed was right — and afterward, doubt began to creep in?
You start thinking:
- Was that really the right thing to do?
- Did I hear God correctly?
- Should I have done something differently?
It happens to me.
Sometimes, after I’ve made a decision from my heart and sincerely tried to do what I believe God is leading me to do, my mind starts going back and forth. I begin to feel unsettled. Doubt creeps in. I find myself questioning what I had already placed in God’s hands.
But this morning, as I was reading my devotion, I came across Hebrews 4:9–11:
“So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God… So let us do our best to enter that rest.”
That word rest spoke to me.
As I wrestled with my thoughts, I asked God to give me peace. I asked Him to remove every spirit of doubt and unbelief. I asked Him to help me enter His rest.
God is a God of peace. He gives us a place of rest in the middle of our struggles. And I’m learning that one of the ways we enter that rest is by getting to know Him — really knowing our Father.
That means:
- Not just knowing what people say about Him
- Not just knowing Scripture because we’ve heard it preached
- But developing a real relationship with Him — talking to Him, reading His Word, telling Him how we feel, being honest about what’s troubling our hearts
Hebrews 4:12 says:
“For the word of God is alive and powerful…”
His Word reaches into the deepest parts of us. It exposes what’s inside our hearts. It reveals our thoughts and desires. There is nothing hidden from God. He already knows what’s in us.
So why hide what He already knows?
Scripture tells us:
“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” — Hebrews 4:16
We can come boldly to Him:
- We can come with our doubts.
- We can come with our fears.
- We can come with our confusion.
- We can come with the things that are troubling our hearts.
We don’t have to pretend everything is okay. We don’t have to suppress what we’re feeling. We don’t have to hide what’s happening inside of us. God already knows.
And instead of running away from Him because we’re struggling to believe, we can run toward Him. We can say:
“Father, You know what’s in my heart. You know what’s troubling me. You know the thoughts I’m struggling with. I need Your mercy. I need Your grace. I need Your peace. Help me.”
And He invites us to come. That’s the beauty of knowing God — we don’t have to have everything figured out before we approach Him. We can come as we are. We can find grace to help us when we need Him most.
When doubt comes, you can come back to His Word and say:
- Lord, I trust You.
- Lord, I believe You.
- I believe Your Word.
- I know You are my God.
- I know You have me.
- I know You have not abandoned me.
And sometimes you have to say it again. And again. Not because you’re trying to convince God — but because you’re reminding your own heart where your trust belongs. Little by little, God’s peace begins to settle your heart.
Hebrews tells us that those who enter God’s rest, rest from their own works — just as God rested after His work of creation. There is a rest that God has prepared for His people. And I’m beginning to understand that entering that rest is also a choice:
- A choice to trust Him when my mind wants to question everything.
- A choice to believe Him when circumstances make me afraid.
- A choice to return to His Word when doubt begins to speak louder than faith.
- A choice to say, “Lord, I trust You.”
There is a place of rest for you. There is a place of rest for me. We don’t have to carry everything ourselves. We just have to keep coming back to Him:
- Keep reading His Word.
- Keep talking to Him.
- Keep getting to know Him.
- Keep filling your heart with His truth and His love.
- Keep making it your pursuit to know the Father.
Because He has promised rest. And His rest is waiting for you.
