When the people closest to you fail to see you, it’s easy to start questioning your worth. But Genesis 16 reminds us — God meets us even in the wilderness.
Finding your worth when you feel unseen is one of the hardest battles we face. Have you ever felt like something shifted… but no one said it out loud?
Like the way someone looked at you had quietly changed. Like you were no longer seen the way you once were — not as cherished, not as appreciated. And without even realizing it, you begin to see yourself differently too.
That’s a painful place to live.
Recently, I found myself there. Finding your worth — questioning things I never used to question, feeling uncomfortable in my own skin, wondering if I had somehow become “less” without anyone saying it directly. And if I’m honest, that feeling stayed with me longer than I expected.
I didn’t open my Bible right away…but something came back to me a story I had read before, one that suddenly felt like it was meeting me right where I was.
The story of Hagar in Genesis 16.
Seen in the Wilderness
If you haven’t read it, you can find it in Genesis 16:7–13. Hagar had been placed in a situation that was never really about her — used, mistreated, and eventually pushed aside. She found herself completely alone in the wilderness, with no one to turn to and no one watching.
And that’s exactly where everything changed.
The Angel of the Lord found her there — in the middle of her pain, in the place where no one else had looked. And in that moment, she spoke words that have stayed with people for thousands of years:
“You are the God who sees me.” — Genesis 16:13
What moves me about this story is that finding your worth isn’t about waiting for others to validate you. It’s where God saw her. Not once everything was resolved. Not once she was valued again by the people around her. But right there — in the wilderness, in the rejection, in the loneliness.
Something about that stayed with me. Sometimes, the wilderness is exactly where we are… right before love shows up in ways we didn’t expect.
And then something shifted
On my birthday, my daughter woke up early, baked a cake, lit a candle, and sang to me. It was a small, quiet thing. But it was intentional. And in that moment, I felt something I hadn’t realized I needed so deeply:
I felt seen.
Not because everything was suddenly fine. Not because all the hard feelings had disappeared. But because love showed up anyway — right in the middle of the mess.
And it reminded me of a truth I needed to hold onto:
When someone doesn’t show up for you, it doesn’t mean you are not worthy of being seen. Finding your worth isn’t about changing yourself or earning someone’s attention. It’s about remembering that God already sees you — sometimes through the most unexpected people, in the most ordinary moments.
A word for You
If you have ever felt unseen, unwanted, or like you are somehow less than you used to be — this story is for you.
You are not invisible. And even in the moments when you question yourself most, God sees you clearly. Completely. Without condition.
“You are the God who sees me.”
Hold on to that truth.
Prayer
God,
There are moments when I don’t feel like myself — moments when I feel unseen, unappreciated, and unsure of my own worth.
But today, I choose to believe that You still see me. Even when others don’t. Even when I struggle to see myself clearly.
Remind me that my value hasn’t changed. Remind me that I am still worthy of love, care, and peace.
And when I feel empty, send the right moments and the right people to gently remind me that I am not alone.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
