When One Storm Ends and Another Begins

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

Have you ever felt like you finally survived a difficult season?

You make it through the pain, the disappointment, the uncertainty, and you begin to believe that a new chapter is finally starting. You can breathe again. You can see hope again. It feels like the storm has passed.

But then, little by little, another storm begins to form.

At first, you barely notice it. The clouds seem small. The challenges seem manageable. Then suddenly you realize you’re struggling again. The wind picks up. The pressure increases. The weight returns.

You find yourself wondering:

“Why does this keep happening?”

“Why does it feel like I take one step forward and two steps back?”

If we’re not careful, we can begin to believe the lie that we’re failing, that we’re stuck, or that God has forgotten us.

But that is not what God says.

Jesus Speaks to the Crushed

As I was reading my devotional, I was drawn to Matthew 5:3:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

When Jesus spoke these words, He was speaking to people who had been overlooked, rejected, and burdened by life.

Many were poor financially, but Jesus was speaking about something even deeper. He was speaking to those who were poor in spirit—people who felt crushed, exhausted, defeated, and unable to keep carrying the weight on their own.

These were people whom society had written off.

People who had suffered.

People who had tried and failed.

People who may have felt like giving up.

And Jesus looked at them and said:

“You are blessed.”

Not because their circumstances were easy.

Not because they had everything figured out.

Not because they were strong enough.

But because they had reached the place where they recognized their need for God.

The Beauty of Being Poor in Spirit

Being poor in spirit is not weakness.

It is humility.

It is the realization that we cannot save ourselves, fix ourselves, or carry every burden on our own.

It is the moment we stop relying entirely on our own strength and begin depending on God’s.

Many of us spend years trying to hold everything together.

We want control.

We want certainty.

We want to be strong enough to handle every problem that comes our way.

I know I do.

I would love to have everything under control.

But the truth is, I can’t.

And neither can you.

We were created to need God.

No matter how successful we become, how hard we work, or how carefully we plan, our souls will always long for the One who created us.

Maybe This Is Where God Wants to Meet You

If you feel defeated today…

If you feel tired…

If you feel like you’ve been fighting the same battles over and over again…

If another storm has appeared just when you thought life was finally getting easier…

Jesus says you are blessed.

Not because the struggle is enjoyable.

Not because God ignores your pain.

But because your need for Him places you in a position to experience His strength.

Sometimes the very place we want to escape becomes the place where God does His deepest work.

The storm may not disappear overnight.

But God is present within it.

The burden may still feel heavy.

But you do not carry it alone.

The road may still be difficult.

But the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who trust Him.

A Prayer

Father,

Today I bring You my weakness, my fears, and my disappointments. When I feel crushed in spirit, remind me that You see me. Help me stop relying only on my own strength and teach me to depend on You.

When new storms arise, help me remember that You are still with me. Give me peace, courage, and faith to trust You one day at a time.

Thank You that You call the weary, the hurting, and the broken blessed.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
